Overview

Glorinda provides optimisation and technological upgrades to non-renewable energy production, to eliminate the waste of valuable non-renewable resources and improve efficiency. Our scope is engineering and upgrading of systems based on turbines or engines, plus the utility and environmental systems that determine how a plant actually performs.

We are direct about where the value is. New-build thermal capacity is a shrinking market in most of our regions. Efficiency, emissions compliance, water consumption and life extension on plants already operating are not — and those are engineering problems that reward the combination of process, water and turbomachinery capability we have.

Where thermal plant efficiency leaks

Boiler feed water quality

Hardness, silica and dissolved ions deposit on boiler tubes and reduce heat transfer. The result is lower steam efficiency, higher fuel consumption, corrosion and higher maintenance cost. Boiler feed water quality is critical for stable plant operation and is one of the main high-quality water consumption points on any plant. Addressed by ion exchange, EDI and mixed bed treatment.

Demineralised water production

The steam cycle needs water with very low conductivity; dissolved ions damage steam equipment. Producing demineralised water is one of the main processes on a steam plant, using RO, ion exchange units and a mixed bed polisher.

Condensate polishing

Water returning from the condenser can carry metallic impurities, corrosion products or cycle contamination, reducing steam quality and equipment life. Large plants need high-quality condensate to maintain Rankine cycle efficiency.

Cooling water and condenser performance

Poor water quality causes scaling, corrosion and fouling in heat transfer equipment. Reduced condenser efficiency increases fuel consumption and reduces plant efficiency. Water quality here is an energy-efficiency question, not just a chemistry one.

Cooling tower blowdown

To prevent TDS rising, part of the circulating water is discharged. That stream carries high dissolved solids and represents a large water loss. The cooling tower is one of the largest water consumers on a thermal plant, and blowdown recovery reduces both fresh water consumption and effluent disposal cost.

Heat leaving the stack

Waste heat recovery, heat recovery steam generation and gas flare recovery convert rejected heat into steam or power. On an existing site this is usually the lowest-cost capacity available.

Emissions and residues

FGD wastewater

Flue gas desulfurization removes SOx from the exhaust but produces a complex effluent carrying sulphate, chloride, heavy metals and high TDS. Coal-fired and some industrial plants face this stream, and conventional treatment is not sufficient for it — it needs advanced wastewater treatment and, in many cases, ZLD.

Ash handling wastewater

Transporting and managing ash with water produces streams with high suspended solids and mineral contaminants. Managing that stream matters for both water consumption and environmental compliance, and it is a pre-treatment and sludge management problem.

Emission monitoring

Continuous emission monitoring systems and air quality monitoring systems, including analysers, sampling systems, shelters and the data analysis and reporting that permits require, are part of our analyzer and metering product line.

Plant-wide water reuse

Power plants consume large volumes of water across multiple processes, and dependence on fresh sources is an operational risk. Reducing water footprint is a primary objective for new plants, especially in dry regions — and increasingly for existing ones.

Turbine modernisation

Glorinda's steam turbine capability includes retrofit and re-rate solutions to extend lifetime and increase efficiency, steam path redesign, rotor-dynamic analysis and updated blading layouts, plus engineering studies, feasibility and profitability analysis, modernisation concepts and scheduling support.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you build new thermal power plants?

We engineer and upgrade systems based on turbines or engines, and we can take EPC or EPCM roles. In practice most of our thermal work is optimisation, efficiency upgrade and life extension on plants that already exist, because that is where the value currently sits in our markets.

What is the quickest efficiency win on an existing plant?

Usually water. Scale on boiler tubes and fouling in the condenser both cost fuel continuously and are both correctable. After that, waste heat recovery, then turbine steam path modernisation.

Can you treat FGD wastewater?

Yes. It carries sulphate, chloride, heavy metals and high TDS, and conventional treatment is not sufficient. It needs advanced wastewater treatment and often ZLD, both of which are core capabilities.

Do you work on turbines from other manufacturers?

Yes. Performance monitoring and maintenance services are offered for Glorinda equipment and for other manufacturers' turbines, along with retrofit and re-rate solutions.
